That Weekend When I Got All Domestic

If you follow me on Instagram, there is probably no reason to even read this post.  But who knows?  Maybe it will just keep you on the edge of your seat…

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told you that we have a home office slash dressing room for me?  Remember how I said that I am terrible about keeping it clean and organized?  Well, that is the truth.  And it is worse than you think…times 1,000.

There are no before pictures and we’re not quite to after pictures but HOLY COW I was an office organizing, DIYing, super cleaning Suzy Homemaker this weekend.

Why? Well, the time has come for me to stop hogging the home office and let Kito put his shiny new computer in there.  He doesn’t want to be climbing over my piles of clothes and magazines…Can you blame him?  And to be honest, I’d be far more productive if my ducks were in a row.

First order of business was replacing the top to a desk we already had.  Kito cut something out on it without a mat underneath, leaving slices in the surface.  It’s not really a huge deal, but it drove me nuts so I picked up a new desk top at Ikea a few weeks ago and finally put it together.

I love the color and it adds a little pop to the room.  Getting it on sale for $10 doesn’t hurt either!

The next task was putting together a bookshelf I got at Target.  Having never purchased any furniture there, I expected similar quality to Ikea.  I was wrong.  It is total crap.  Luckily, the shelf didn’t cost much and it does what we need it to do.  It might fall on our heads, but I guess that’s a risk we’re willing to take.  Adding the extra bookshelf to the room reduced the amount of clutter that was just sitting around.  Things finally have a place to go! AND AND AND I got rid of so many things.

Like these magazines and Nordstrom catalogs from 2009.  I don’t think I need them anymore.

I also bit the bullet and got rid of work that I did while in design school.  I haven’t touched it in five years and while I loved looking through everything again, I’m not going to ever use it again.  I know that I am still a designer but I no longer design clothes so it’s just kind of a waste keeping everything around.

To start organizing some clutter, I got my Ikea on… You can just call me Bob the Builder now.  I put together a dresser for the office slash dressing room (I have too many clothes), another small dresser for our bedroom (Kito has too many clothes) and a shoe rack for our foyer (we both have too many shoes).

Oh!!!! Speaking of shoes, I had the day from hell on Friday.  I cried at work for the first time (because I was super angry, not sad) and decided to utilize a little retail therapy.  These new spiced coral pumps did the trick.

I love them.

Ok back to my weekend…

The progress I made is amazing.  We’ve lived in our house for two years and I lack the domestic, nesting traits necessary to get it fully unpacked and in order.  This is another step forward.  I’m sure it won’t ever be finished.  Fortunately, I have some other redeeming qualities so I’m worth keeping around.

Since I was working my behind off all weekend, I failed to workout.  Let me rephrase… I failed to do a structured workout.  But carrying boxes and furniture up and down three floors, putting furniture together and cleaning are a serious workout.  When I carried manageable sized boxes upstairs, I did overhead presses while I climbed for an upper body workout. Both days I have been sweaty and exhausted.  And my hamstrings are shot.  Like I had the hardest leg workout ever…

As you can see, I’m standing at the bar in our kitchen, blogging and stretching at the same time.

I am a multitasking machine.

Kito just came home and it’s time to get his new baby set up.  By baby, I mean computer.  He did not bring home a new girlfriend.  Get your mind out of the gutter.

Happy Sunday!

    • We have so many unpacked boxes in our garage too! It always makes me think we should just throw them away because we clearly don’t need the contents.

Being organized can make things easier, however I think it can be easily overrated and over-hyped. It’s ok to just enjoy a life with a drop of chaos :)
